NGO quizzed over unethical conversions

The Parliamentary Select Committee on NGOs has questioned a leading international charity organization regarding unethical religious conversions mainly in rural parts of Sri Lanka.

The Committee which met last week summoned two representatives of the World Vision for questioning on allegations made against the organization.

Giving evidence before the Committee, a former employee of the organization said programmes had been launched in areas such as Lunugamvehera in the Hambantota district targeting rural people.

According to him, this organization conducts

pre-schools in under privileged areas as part of its plan to convert children to other faiths.
It was also revealed that a large number of Hindus had also been converted by this organization in the eastern province.

Two NGO representatives who were present at the meeting, identified their organization as one with a religious identity. They said this factor was considered when recruiting employees to the organization too. While denying the conversion of people in an unethical manner, they said they could not stop anyone from embracing their faith upon conviction.
