Foreigners desecrate sanctity of Sri Dalada Maligawa By J.A.L.Jayasinghe

A group of scantily dressed foreigners had entered the Maha Maluwa of the Sri Dalada Maligawa in the forenoon on Sunday (05), running hither and thither, to video the Sri Dalada Maligawa. Their conduct was a disgrace to the ancient Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy and had obstructed road transport. The Buddhist in Kandy questioned as to who had permitted them to enter the Mahamaluwa of Sri Dalada Maligawa.
The females were dressed in panties and jackets exposing parts of their bodies and the males were wearing shorts and banians. The foreigners caused hindrance to the devotees who had come to the Sri Dalada Maligawa.
The Sri Dalada Maligawa is enclosed by fences and declared a high security area. Notices are displayed in English and Sinhala, at all the gates, stating that entry is strictly prohibited to those who are not properly attired.
Buddhists in Kandy pointed out the ancient Sri Dalada Maligawa is regarded as the crest of Buddhists the world over and not a place for dancing or video recording.
However, on hearing about the incident, DIG Central Province had issued orders to hold an inquiry. Diyawadana Nilame Niranjan Wijeratne is not in the island at the moment.
