'Hollywood Buddha': Ministry to protest By Shakuntala Perera (www.dailymirror.lk/2004/09/10)

The Cultural Ministry is to lodge a protest with the US embassy here of its opposition to the film 'Hollywood Buddha' to be released in Los Angeles this month.

Cultural Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath said in parliament yesterday that they would inform the US authorities that the film is an insult to Buddhism.

Making a special statement he said, "The American film 'Hollywood Buddha' depicts scenes which are harmful to Buddhism and an insult not only to Buddhism but to all religions. Therefore, I will take steps to request the US authorities not to screen this film or any other which is harmful to religions. I will inform the US Embassy shortly."

"We should condemn this film. Thailand has taken the lead and has organized a protest march. As a Buddhist country, we should do the same. I wish to record our strong opposition to this film," he said.

The film, expected to be released on September 24 in Los Angeles depicts in a poster, its director sitting on a Buddha statue.
