Bhikku parliamentarians charting a stormy course by Damitha Hemachandra

The much-publicised tell-all media conference of JHU General Secretary Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera ended in an anti-climax when the Thera postponed his final announcement by two weeks.

The Thera who arrived at the Mahaweli Centre one and half hours late accompanied by JHU parliamentary group leader, Ven. Athuraliye Ratana Thera said the Supreme Sangha Council of the JHU, which met with the JHU Consultative Committee headed by Dr. Chandra Wickrema Gamage had pledged to resolve the present party conflict in the coming two weeks.

" I have given my word not to make public comments and announcements on the prevailing crisis in the JHU," Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera said requesting the media to pose him no questions.

Reassuring the assembled supporters that he would not be abandoning his desire to instal a 'Dharmarajya' he determinedly said he would not be resigning in the face of any obstacle.

Commenting on the allegations about his recent trips to London and back, the Thera said he had been travelling abroad regularly on religious missions. He said the travelling expenses for his journey from London to vote for the Bill mandating the NIC and back again to London were met by himself, denying allegations the expenses had been paid by the government.

Meanwhile Ven. Ratana Thera insisted that the problems of the party should be discussed in camera.

Explaining the future stand of the JHU Ven. Ratana Thera insisted that the JHU parliamentary group would continue to take an independent stance in Parliament.

" Any crisis situation should be dealt with according to the party constitution," he said adding that no member of the JHU Supreme Council could act independently on their journey towards establishing a 'Dharmarajya'.

While adding that a crisis within the JHU would be a victory for anti-nationalistic foreign forces, Ven. Ratana Thera made a request for sensible and responsible action by JHU MPs.
