Politicos must not fool the people — Mahanayake Thero by Cyril Wimalasurendre

KANDY Some politicians who are elected by the people to power consider the voters have given them power to enjoy themselves ignoring the electors who elected them and thus ruin the country, observed the Most Ven. Tibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thero of Malwatte Chapter when a deputation of the All Island Union of Justices of the Peace (JPs) called on him Sunday (24) on Sunday.

Politicians in power have no right or freedom to split the country or parcel it out to others without a mandate from the people, Most Ven. Mahanayake Thero warned.

The political groups should arrive at a common decision on sensitive issues of the day, the Mahanayake Thero noted.

All political groups, in particular the United National Party (UNP), the largest political party now in the opposition must consider its responsibility to assist the Advisory Committee appointed to find a solution to the major issue of the country, the prelate noted.

No group should keep off from the discussions accusing the government that the advisory committee has been appointed with the ulterior motive of putting of peace-talks between the Government and LTTE. The groups must sit round and decide upon what should be offered to the LTTE, he said.

Neither the government nor the LTTE can continue like this for ever. Both sides must compromise, he added.

What is important at this crucial juncture is unity among different groups in the south, he stressed.

The Mahanayake Thero said that in appointing JPs, even unsuitable characters have been appointed.

President of the Union of the JPs, N. M. N. Aseem told the prelate that the major issue of the day could be resolved by an united effort.

All political groups should unite in the exercise, he added.

Ven. Walgowwagoda Wimalabuddhi Thero, Secretary, Malwatte Chapter, Ven. Dr. Pahamune Sumangala Thero, Kandy MMC Raja Pushpakumara and DIG Nimal Mediwake were among those present at the meeting.
